{"id":2847,"date":"2024-10-16T11:14:29","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T11:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/altafina-stripped.dev2.wshost.ca\/gifts-of-securities-more-advantageous-than-you-think\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T19:26:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T19:26:33","slug":"gifts-of-securities-more-advantageous-than-you-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altafina.com\/en\/gifts-of-securities-more-advantageous-than-you-think\/","title":{"rendered":"Gifts of securities: more advantageous than you think!"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n    <section id=\"block_f1daf709aaedcf9c19066e55fd315198\" class=\"section section-text palette-default lws-animate-section\">\r\n\r\n        \r\n        \r\n        <div class=\"block block-text\">\r\n            \r\n<div class=\"container\">\r\n    <div class=\"content-text text-left w-full mr-auto lws-fade-item\">\r\n        <h5><strong>Thinking of donating to charity?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Gifts of securities (e.g., publicly traded stocks or ETFs) with substantial capital gains offer significant advantages over cash donations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\"><strong>Tax credit:<\/strong>\u00a0Like cash donations, gifts of publicly traded securities qualify for a non-refundable tax credit.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/altafina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gift-of-securities-1.png\" \/><br \/>\n<em>* Note that if you are in the highest federal tax bracket, the federal tax credit can be as high as 33% (instead of 29%) on a portion of your donation.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-viewer-4sdc0847\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" dir=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\"><strong>Tax-exempt capital gains:<\/strong>\u00a0Unlike cash gifts, making a gift of securities allows you to avoid capital gains tax and therefore your gift costs you less than if you would have sold them.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/altafina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gift-of-securities-2.png\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li id=\"viewer-viewer-6d55k1199\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\"><strong>Additional benefits<\/strong>: The tax advantage is even greater if capital gains avoidance preserves other income-related benefits, such as Old Age Security (OAS) pension.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong>To maximize the benefits of gifts of securities, keep the following points in mind:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Donation in kind:<\/strong>\u00a0Transfer the securities directly to the charity&#8217;s brokerage account before December 31st, to declare the donation in the same tax year. Plan ahead, as the donation may take a few days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic choice:<\/strong>\u00a0Select securities with the biggest capital gains.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Registered charities:<\/strong>\u00a0Ensure that the chosen charity is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to receive official donation receipts for tax credit purposes. <a class=\"ReYqi n2z1j\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/charities-giving\/list-charities\/list-charities-other-qualified-donees.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u>Click here to access the list.<\/u><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-viewer-td2j31241\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" dir=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\"><strong>Combine your donations, it can be more tax efficient!<\/strong>\u00a0You can combine your donations with those of your spouse and declare them on the tax return of the person with the higher income, thereby obtaining a larger tax credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Reminders for your tax return:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not forget to keep your donation receipt.<\/li>\n<li>The capital gain triggered by the donation will be included on your tax slip (the T5008), but it will not be reported as a donation. Remind your accountant to make the link between the triggered capital gain and the donation receipt, as this can be overlooked.<\/li>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-viewer-jf3qi1251\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" dir=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\">You can also take this opportunity to check with your accountant whether it would be advantageous to spread the tax credit over several years, rather than using it in a single year. You can keep all your donation receipts and declare them for future years (up to 5 years).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Important note on the additional 25% tax credit for cultural donations:<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-gkicm33578\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" dir=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\">Securities donations are <strong><u>not eligible<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0for the additional credit. Donations must be made in cash. There are also other conditions and details to consider, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"_110Xd\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p id=\"viewer-mkga233586\" class=\"kFB2b Fg5BJ hRr0S _9Osz5\" dir=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\"><span class=\"_5bJSe\"><strong>The additional credit applies to a<\/strong> <strong>single major cultural donation<\/strong>\u00a0made by an individual. If multiple donations are made within the same year to the same eligible cultural recipient, they are considered a single donation.
