Costs and investor protection

A transparent cost structure aligned with your interests

A successful long-term wealth management relationship is built on trust, transparency, and aligned interests.
At AltaFina, we are compensated exclusively by our clients. No investment commissions. No proprietary products.
No sales quotas. Our compensation structure is designed to minimize conflicts of interest and naturally align our interests with yours.

Our management fees are:

  • Agreed upon in advance
  • Clearly disclosed on your account statements
  • Charged monthly directly from your portfolio
  • Tiered based on assets under management (as your portfolio grows, the percentage fee decreases)

Insurance

Insurance is the only exception. In Canada, insurance products are generally not offered on a fee-based basis. Compensation is paid through commissions established by the insurance companies, not by AltaFina.

External professionals

When your situation requires the expertise of a notary, accountant, or tax professional, those professionals bill you directly for their services.

Value beyond fees

Investing is not free, and it’s entirely reasonable to pay for professional advice. What’s important is understanding what you’re paying for, why you’re paying for it, and the value you receive in return. The true value of wealth management cannot be measured by investment returns alone.

It should also be measured by:

  • Higher after-tax outcomes
  • A simpler financial life
  • Costly mistakes avoided
  • A well-coordinated long-term strategy
  • Greater peace of mind

Our fees are regularly benchmarked against comparable independent discretionary wealth management firms. Our goal is not to be the lowest-cost provider. It is to offer a fee structure that is transparent, competitive, and aligned with the value we deliver.

Professional qualifications, industry experience, and corporate independence all matter. So does the quality of the relationship. Thoughtful guidance, genuine accessibility, and decisions made exclusively in your best interest are equally important parts of the value we provide.

Over time, these factors can have a far greater impact on your financial success than a few additional percentage points of investment return.

Who we work best with

We intentionally limit the number of client relationships we take on so we can provide thoughtful, personalized advice while remaining readily available when important decisions arise.

Our approach is particularly well suited to investors who:

  • Are looking for a stable, long-term advisory relationship
  • Want to delegate day-to-day investment decisions while understanding the strategy behind them
  • Value a disciplined, evidence-based investment approach grounded in academic research

We typically work with individuals and families whose investable assets range from $500,000 to several million dollars, where coordinating investment, tax, retirement, and estate planning decisions becomes especially valuable.
